Setting audio levels correctly

Setting your audio levels correctly is essential for clean, distortion-free sound. While loud music is exciting, pushing levels too far can result in clipping and listener fatigue. Maintaining proper headroom—the space between your peak level and distortion—is key to a professional-sounding set.

Avoiding the red

The goal is to stay out of the red on your level meters. If your signal peaks into the red, it means you're likely distorting the audio. This not only sounds unpleasant but also reduces clarity.

Setting channel gains

Start by properly setting your channel gain (also called trim):

  1. Play the loudest part of your track.
  2. Raise the gain until the meter peaks just below the red.
  3. Adjust each track similarly to keep your mix balanced.
note

Each channel contributes to the overall output volume, so when mixing multiple decks, be aware of how levels stack. Use EQ and volume faders to avoid overloading the master output.

Watch the entire audio chain

Avoid maxing out any part of the audio chain. For example:

  • If your amp or speaker is at full volume, even a clean signal can start to distort.
  • Keep enough headroom on each component to preserve sound quality.

djay includes helpful features like Auto Gain and Auto Limiter to manage levels automatically. These can help balance tracks and prevent clipping, especially in dynamic or fast-paced sets. Go to the Sound settings section to learn more.
